The crab crosswalk

This post is a quick behind-the-scenes creative process for the development and implementation of the crab themed crosswalk on Phelps Luck Dr.

Project Overview

The crab crosswalk was created during my creative methodologies class in the spring of 2022 to improve safety in my neighborhood. The process began by observing the dynamics and identifying critical spots that needed intervention, such as a crossing point in the school zone where pedestrians, especially children, often crossed Phelps Luck Dr. at risky points.

Identifying the Need for Change

Engaging with locals, including a concerned mother whose kids navigated these dangerous paths daily, emphasized the pressing need for action. Despite suggestions like using the school bus or driving children, it was evident that safer crossings nearer to vital spots were imperative.

To offer a practical and budget-friendly solution, the idea was to install a crosswalk on Phelps Luck Dr., Drawing inspiration from existing crosswalk designs and incorporating a playful Maryland crab symbol.

Some of the process

In the making process, selecting the perfect typeface was crucial to convey the friendliness and clarity of our crab-themed crosswalk. After extensive research and collaboration, a thick and round font was chosen: Anja Eliane. Additionally, laser cutting played a pivotal role in bringing our vision to life with precision and efficiency. From intricate crab stencils to engraved signage, the laser cutter ensured every detail was executed flawlessly, making the crab crosswalk visually striking and functional.

Community Engagement and Prototype Testing
Even in its prototype phase, the crab stencil caught the attention of neighborhood children, indicating the potential impact of the intervention. Despite being washed away by rain soon after, the stencil perseveres, awaiting for sunnier days.
